Chaim Book

For more than 30 years, I have focused my practice in the area of Labor & Employment Law, representing executive employees, business owners of privately owned businesses, private schools, and not-for-profit organizations. Beyond my legal practice, I’m also a business owner. As a law firm owner since 1996, I understand firsthand the many challenges involved in running a business in New York City—both legal and practical.

When I meet with new clients, I conduct a comprehensive review of all their employee and HR practices and then provide specific, tailored recommendations to help them navigate the complex web of employment laws that apply to their operations. I also assist clients in dealing with government agencies, including the U.S. and state Departments of Labor, the NYC Commission on Human Rights, the New York State Division of Human Rights, the New Jersey Civil Rights Division, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Over the years, I’ve successfully defended clients facing claims of employment discrimination and harassment through litigation, arbitration, mediation, and settlement negotiation. I’ve represented clients in both federal and state courts in New York, New Jersey, and beyond, as well as in proceedings before the American Arbitration Association and JAMS. Notably, I’ve also represented many clients in arbitration before Rabbinical courts (Beth Din).

The types of matters I’ve worked on include:

• Discrimination based on gender, race, age, religion, disability, and national origin
• Sexual and other workplace harassment
• Breaches of contract, including non-compete and confidentiality provisions
• Wage and hour disputes
• Negotiation of employment agreements, restrictive covenants (such as non-compete clauses), and severance packages

Before founding Book Law, LLP, I was the co-founder and managing partner of Moskowitz & Book, LLP for 27 years.

I’ve had the pleasure of serving as an advisor to boards and officers of various not-for-profit organizations and have also had the privilege of serving as a board member. Over the course of my career, I’ve represented more than a hundred synagogues, churches, and religious elementary, middle, and high schools in employment law matters. As a complement to my practice, I enjoy speaking opportunities as various conferences and conventions, where I have presented on a wide range of Employment Law-related topics.
