Maximum Weekly Unemployment Insurance Benefit Set to Increase in New York

As of October 13, 2025, New York’s maximum weekly unemployment insurance (UI) benefit increased from $504 to $869.  This was the first increase in weekly UI benefits since 2019. The new rate took effect for benefit payments issued during the week of October 13.  More than half of unemployed New Yorkers are likely to see an increase in their UI benefits, even if they are not receiving the maximum amount.

This change was made possible by the allocation of nearly $7 billion in the latest state budget to repay the federal loan used to keep New York’s UI Trust Fund solvent during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the debt now repaid and the UI Trust Fund restored to solvency, New York can raise benefit levels while also reducing the financial burden on employers.

Employers will no longer receive annual Interest Assessment Surcharge bills, which were previously used to cover interest on the federal loan. As a result, businesses are projected to save an average of $100 per employee in 2026 and $250 per employee in 2027.
