Key Legal Updates: NY COVID-19 Leave Has Expired
Legal Updates
New York State COVID-19 Leave Expired as of July 31, 2025
As of July 31, 2025, New York State’s COVID-19 Paid Emergency Leave law has officially expired. New York employers are no longer required to provide separate paid leave specifically for employees in quarantine or isolation due to COVID-19.
Employees who are unable to work for reasons related to COVID-19, whether due to their personal illness or to care for a sick family member, may use existing leave options. Eligible employees may use New York State or New York City Earned Sick and Safe Time, depending on where they are located. Alternatively, employees may use paid family leave or seek disability benefits if there are qualifying circumstances.
Employers should update internal policies, handbooks, and guidance now to ensure compliance and to reflect the current benefits available to their workforce.
